Has the area around Walloon Lake changed much in the past 100 years?

It can be great fun to go to 'timeless' places like Paris and Venice, but it can be shocking to go to a small place that you've read about, only to find it has been plastered with condo's (yuck).

I'll be in southern Ontario next month, but I'm not sure I'll have time to drive to northern Michigan. I'll definitely be hiking around the Caledon Hills and taking a look at the Credit River (of course!) where Hemingway fished when he lived in Toronto. There're lots of quiet places left--it just takes more work finding them, I guess. EH would've loved British Columbia, Yukon and Alaska--from what I've read, it sounds like he never set foot in B.C. You'd think he would've driven to B.C. just for the heck of it (or for the salmon fishing). Does anyone know if he did any fishing in Washington State?

Cheers,

Leo

i can't personally comment on the whole 100 years but can for 40. it has
become a place for the rich detroiters and floridians as well to build
ponderosas. the woods that once was between petoskey and charlevoix
are now filled with equestrian centers, tennis clubs, condos and yacht
clubs. boyne city even has taken on the look of cape cod... not much is
timeless but change. john

That's the way it goes, eh? Especially with waterfront property.

docme...THE SILENT PLACES by Stewart Edward White is available online from several sources [ I GOOGLED - THE SILENT PLACES + White + online and here is one hit among others - http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:wIWgP9ZXZzUJ:www.online- literature.com/stewart-white/silent-places/+%22+silent+place s%22+%2B+white+%2B+%22+online%22&hl=en&gl=us&ct= clnk&cd=1 ]

Each time I finish reading Hemingway's incompleted last sentence to his AFRICA BOOK  the silence seems as unbroken today as it must have been when Hemingway stopped writing and no doubt saw The Mountain overlaid on the blank page as it was when he began the book...the same silence he experienced while resting his head on the pillow stuffed with balsam needles from the north woods and looked out through the opened tent flaps to Kilimanjaro.

" ...so unbroken was the silence...so golden the peace... "

Best

Paul
