Very little or none of For Whom The Bell Tolls was written in Florida. Hemingway started it in Cuba in 1939, where he kept a room at the Ambros Mundos in Havana. At this point he was married to Pauline in name only, but was carrying on an open affair with Martha Gellhorn. They later moved into the Finca Vigia.
Before he divorced Pauline, he returned briefly to Key West to see his son, but found he couldn't get any work done there due to various interuptions and guests.
Besides Cuba, EH worked on it when visiting the Nordquist Ranch in Wyoming, and later in Sun Valley in Idaho.
