If you're in Montana, this might be an interesting side-trip:

A play based on the work of Ernest Hemingway, and written by his daughter-in-law, Bozeman resident Carol Hemingway, is now touring Montana.

"It Just Catches," is based on the short stories "Cat in the Rain," "A Three Day Blow" and some other writing, including some posthumous work, Carol Hemingway explained.

She is married to Patrick Hemingway, Ernest's son and a former professional big game hunter and educator in Africa.

Carol Hemingway wrote the play in 1999 after participating in a playwriting seminar at the Montana Repertory Theater, which is based at the University of Montana in Missoula.

One of the people at that seminar asked if she had ever considered adapting her famous father-in-law's work for the stage. At the time, she hadn't, but that planted the seed and she soon went to work.

"I adopted much of the dialogue using Hemingway's own words," she said Monday.

The play was completed in 1999, the centenary of Hemingway's birth, and was performed in Missoula. Later, it was staged in New York.

Now, the Montana Rep is using an abridged version of the play in its educational outreach program, performing in small towns and cities all over the state.

However, Bozeman residents who want to see the play will have to do a little driving.

They can catch performances in Dillon at UM Western on Wednesday, at 7 p.m. in room 314 in the Main Hall; in White Sulphur Springs, at the elementary school on Oct. 12 at 209 Central Ave. South at 7 p.m.; and in Great Falls at the public library at 301 Second Ave. North at 7 p.m. on Oct. 13.

Speaking of HEMINGWAY ON STAGE, has anyone here seen Brian Gordon Sinclair's full length plays detailing the life of Ernest Hemingway? To date, three plays have been written - SUNRISE, THE LOST GENERATION, and DEATH IN THE AFTERNOON. They have been presented to great acclaim at the Hemingway Days Festival in Key West.  The fourth play, titled MAN EATERS will be performed there in July 2006. The fifth and final play will be done in 2007. These plays are brilliant and so is the performance. For more information, check the playwright's web site:
