This is my fear, Papa: If the movie tanks, no one will want to touch anything about Hemingway for years.

If it's a surprise success, look for more about Hemingway in the pipeline.

Could a Hemingway TV series be in the offing? Probably not ...

Remember Gone With The Wind and Vivien Leigh?  I venture to say that Anthony Hopkins will play Hemingway like Vivien Leigh played Scarlet Ohara.

That could be interpreted both ways ... that Hopkins will do great, or will fail miserably, as the greatest American writer of the 20th century.

I happen to think Englishwoman Vivien Leigh was very convincing as a antebellum Southern belle.

I hope Sir Anthony lives up to that tradition.

I truly can't imagine Anthony Hopkins not doing a fine job. It would truly be a shame if it turned out badly though.

Hopkins will be great!!!  In Love and War wasn't a great movie.  The only part I liked was the part that didn't happen...the ending.  O'Donnell was okay.  A series would be great.  They did that will Elvis back in the 90s, but I'm sure that won't happen here.  We can dream can't we?  Until that time comes we have Keach.

I was pleased to see that Roger Donaldson will be directing "Papa."  I enjoyed his movie Thirteen Days a great deal.  Donaldson has a solid, workmanlike approach to films and I'm pretty confident that the Hem movie will be in that straight-ahead, William Wyler tradition  of no-frills storytelling.  Not to compare Donaldson to Wyler, or Wyler to anyone for that matter.

The danger, of course, is that the director and screenwriter will try to portray Hemingway as just a lunatic in his final days, and miss the other half of him.

Hemingway was about more than the paranoia and fears that drove his final days. He was about more than the body parts that refused to perform.

He saw beauty and ugliness and truth and falsehood and he was adamant about conveying them to us without preaching. He was as much generous and kind as he was rude and beastly, and one hopes "Papa" will capture this kinder, artistic side of the man.
