In "Hemingway A Biography" by Jeffrey Meyers ($2.50 at a library book sale...what a deal...), he says that Katy Smith was Pauline Pfeiffer's roommate at the St. Louis School of Journalism in 1918. Also, Hadley was a classmate and close friend of Katy Smith's at the Mary Institute in St. Louis.

Now, surely, with the publicity surrounding Hemingway's wounding, Hadley would have asked Katy everything she knew about Hemingway, no? And with Katy being Pauline's roommate, wouldn't she have told Pauline a lot about her past including her friendship with Hemingway? Perhaps they even corresponded after they were no longer roommates and Katy may have told Pauline more about 'that Hemingway guy' who got wounded over in Italy. Maybe Katy, depending on what she said about Hemingway, played a very important role in causing Hadley and Pauline to be attracted to him. Apparently Pauline thought he was a bit of a slob at first, but perhaps Katy said something to make her interested? Any ideas (and, of course, corrections)?

Cheers,

Leo
