Papa C (Larry): well, I just had my latest attempt rejected from a writer friend's agent. That is, the agent read 8 pages and decided not to represent it.
Which brings me to my advice to not only you, but anyone else working at this: there are tons of agents out there. Just search "Literary Agents" and you'll find one of the best resources - the Association of Artists' Representatives' Literary Agents directory. It includes who takes e-mail queries.

Full Disclosure:
Larry: in the interest of full disclosure, and in an attempt to let others vicariously experience the struggle, I must report that I'm now 2-for-2 in agent strike-outs.
Tried with the agent of another friend, who kindly or at least honestly told me he didn't think he could sell my novel.
