My mother says that her mother used to claim that Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald visited Winchester, Wisconsin, while my mother and her family were living there.  My mother moved to Winchester with her family in 1920 when she was 6; she thinks they moved away in 1923.  Winchester, Wisconsin was a small lumbering town in Vilas County, right up on the Michigan boarder.  The nearest town of any size was Rhinelander.  What's left of the town is now a summer retreat and retiree village.  At the time, it was the site of a lumber mill for which my grandfather was the purchasing agent and general store manager.  Presumably, if EH and FSF ever went there at all, it was a hunting or fishing trip.

Was my grandmother's memory faulty, or did this trip ever actually take place?

I don't think that Hemingway even met Scott Fitzgerald until about 1925 (in Paris), so if your grandmother meant they were together, that never happened.
Hemingway was still in the US(and Canada for awhile)in 1920 and most of 1921, so it's possible he got there sometime. He moved to Europe late in 1921.
Fitzgerald was still in the US during that period, I believe, but I don't picture him as much of the hunting, fishing type.
