Hi - Does anyone know where Mary Welsh was raised or where she was from?

Thank you,

Hi Bob,

Mary was born in Walker, Minnesota on April 5, 1908.  Her father was a Minnesota logger who also ran a riverboat up and down the Mississippi River.

Mary went to Northwestern University for 3 years before dropping out, got a job at the Chicago Daily News and then moved on to other writing jobs including one for Time magazine for whom she was working in London when she met Hemingway in 1944.

To be honest though I'm not sure if she was raised the whole time in Minnesota or not.

Hi Mark - This more or less confirms a story that I heard years ago.  In 1949 my folks bought a house on the shores of Leech Lake, five miles north of Walker, Minnesota. We were told a fellow by the name of Welsh built the house and raised a family of girls. and sold the house and property to another fellow by the name of Kanute Sundehime in 1933.  When I was child, Kanute would come around an visit once in a while.  When I was growing up there were remnants of a barn and a saw mill that the elder welsh built and ran.  I graduated from Walker High School in 1951.  My folks went on to live there until maybe 1982 when they sold it.

During that time my mother sent me a article from the Walker Pilot , the local news paper, that told the story of the welsh family and Mary being raised in our house.  The house was always well maintained and a few years ago it was actually moved to a little town of Benedict just a short distance away.

I always wondered about that story of Mary Welsh and I just saw something about Ernest Hemingway on TV and that led me to your forum.  I guess the story is true.

Thank you very much for the reply and regards,

Bob Lowe

One note Bob...Mary was an only child, so I'm not sure if that helps or hurts the story.

Update:  The Welshes did have a cottage on the high bank of Leech Lake in 1904.  Mary was born in that cottage in 1908.

That turned into their summer home after they moved to Bemidji so Mary would have a better school to attend when she started kindergarten.

This info comes from Mary's own memoir "How It Was."

Take care.
