I have been listeing and loving the audio tapes where stacy keach reads his short stories I just finished up in michagan it was an interesting atory what time period was this written in hemingways life does anyone know?

It was one of the first I  think.

 Recently I  read an article by someone calling it a "date rape" story.
I  got  a good chuckle out of that.

Right,

It was one of Hemingway's first stories.  It appeared in Three Stories & Ten Poems published in 1923.

As for the content...in A Movable Feast Hemingway recalls showing the story to Gertrude Stein, the literary doyen of the Paris art community.  Here's the passage:

Miss Stein sat on the bed that was on the floor and asked to see the stories I had written and she said that she liked them except one called "Up in Michigan". 
"It's good", she said," that's not the question at all. But it is inaccrochable. That means it is like a picture that a painter paints and then he cannot hang it when he has a show and nobody will buy it because they cannot hang it either".
