  Like alot of things Papa it may be a mystery.  Carried someone across a battlefield...smoked?  Hmmmm...

  Before any attacks...those who love Papa can joke about Papa.

I saw a photograph in either the Mellow book or the Lynn book [I suspect it was the latter] that showed EH shortly after his wounding on the Piave ... he was in uniform and smoking a cigarette.

I would guess by the time he returned to the kingdom of Mama Grace in Oak Park, EH ditched the habit.

  There's a pic of Hemingway blowing smoke out of his nose.  Somebody must have seen it.

  Where's that guy who was the reincarnation of Hemingway?  We should ask him.

Rob and Papa C:  Reading your posts that validate my original answer is the message board equivalent of the finale of Dead Poet's Society.  "Thank you boys.  Thank you."

“…a handsome offer of 40 cents for his cigarette case.”

[His = the reporter: Hemingway.]

Ernie was testing the supposition that pawn shops would not buy, sell or trade war medals.  They wouldn't but one pawn shop offered to buy his cigarette case.

I have a video called Hemingway in the Autumn - Ernest Hemingway in Idaho - I believe it is sponsored by Sun Valley something or other.  There is a 5 second clip in it that shows Ernie smoking.  He is sitting next to Martha at a dinner table.  He and Martha are joshing around and the clip could be interpreted that he grabbed Martha's cigarette and took a few puffs and she's pretending an effort to get it back.

Sounds like something he would do.  Especially with Martha.
