Generally I would say not. I suspect he puffed on a cigar or cigarette occasionally, as most did in his era, but I never considered him a smoker. You never see him smoking in photographs and it's not mentioned in his biographies.
Someone else may know more on this. ???

I've only seen him smoking in the photos when he and Hadley were sitting on a bench. This was probably around the time of their wedding, before they went to Paris. I'm guessing that he stopped when they lived in Paris. Booze being Papa's great vice.

Ernest Hemingway did not smoke. He claimed he had a keen sense of smell and used it when hunting . He believed ,moking would have deminished his sense of smell. LarryG

I'm pretty sure he smoked, but it may not have been a constant thing. I'll look for it.

(Thumbing through Selected Letters...ah, here we are...)
In a letter to his father dated Sept. 14, 1927, EH writes:
"I remember Mother saying once that she would rather see me in my grave than something--I forget what--smoking cigarettes perhaps. If it's of any interest I don't smoke. Haven't for almost 3 years altho you probably will hear stories that I smoke like a furnace."

He was not a smoker after marrying Hadley and moving to Paris. Can't remember where but I believe it may be in one of Michael Reynolds books where it is stated that Hemingway did not smoke because he felt the smoke would interfere with his taste buds and alter the flavor of fine wines and foods.

He says he did not smoke in two places...one in the Dorthy Parker interview and one in Green Hills of Africa.
To be truthful, he also was described as trying Nazionales and / or some other Italian cigarette and drinking red wine when he returned to Oak Park form italy. But I doubt that anyone would call him a smoker.

I have a video of a Hedda Hopper Hollywood revue or some such thing and there's a clip of Papa at the Finca with Marty and he takes a cigarette from her and smokes it and not as if it was the first time.
