Ernest Hemingway filled a book with what happenned to Jake Barnes and Brett Ashley with events that happened on their journey before, during, and after the fiesta. While what happens to them of course has interested readers for years, it is what they learned from these days that really matters.
Emilie Barnes [ Barnes - a little syncronicity LG ] wrote a book titled EVERYTHING I KNOW I LEARNED IN MY GARDEN: Lifes Lessons In My Own Back Yard.
" The seed planted in the cold, dark earth rises in the dawn and warmth of a new day, a new spring. There is a rythm to life and to the eons of history, that we cannot understand. This is a New Year and the first day of the rest of our life. We are all on a great journey, and though so much seems to the contrary, the power behind that journey is the power of love.
I can see Hemingway jotting down potential names for Brett on a sheet of paper while thumbing through his reference Bible to read the much quoted passage from Isaiah he heard repeated throughout his childhood ---
" To appoint unto them that mourn in Zion, to give unto them beuty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the Lord, that he might be glorified. "
Sychronicity again ...the Hebrew for beauty is pe'er meaning fancy headress/beautiful diadam/tiara...meaning all who mourn will be given a beautiful nuptial tiara instead of the ashes thrown on the head while mourning.
No wonder to me Hemingway settled on the name ' Ashley '.
