This will give you some idea of the effect Wilma had on the vegetation in Key West.

This is a shot from a room at the Pier House prior to the storm...

And this is almost the exact same view taken from the same room afterwards...Honest.

Were you there?  Quite a lot of damage was done to the trees around here - Fort Lauderdale.  The leaves were missing from the trees that were left standing.  The sky had a dull gray color after it passed and the area could have been mistaken for a Chicago winter.  No joke.  It was strange.  I wonder if there was much damage to Hemingway's House.

  Thanks for the pics.

Yes. The shots were taken only about four months apart.

Hemingway's house seems to have been spared much damage but it is beginning to look shabby. They do quite a bit of maintenace but not a lot of improvements from year to year. The vegatation on the island was blown pretty badly which has caused almost no blooming. This was the first time I've not seen the yellow and orange royal poinciana trees blooming. And there was a storm serge which covered the island with salt water. This got into the ground water and was absorbed by the plants and which is slowly killing them.

Out at the magroves, the bird's nests were mostly destroyed so there is concern for the next generation.

Peter, Larry: that's terrible. Are the Frangipani still blossoming?

As for the birds in the mangroves, animals tend to be among the first to head out of the danger zone as trouble approaches (they are used to tip off the Chinese, for instance, in earthquakes). I'm hoping they high-tailed it elsewhere and are, like everyone, deciding the merits of rebuilding where they used to thrive or moving on.

Here's hoping next season isn't as bad as this past one...

Glad you're both okay, by the way.

Best,
hijo

  Thanks hijo!

We have a relative (kind of) who lives in Key West on Caroline st near Simonton.  The storm surge floaded his house.  He says right now the island is nice - few tourists.  I'm hoping to make it there again before our move up north.
