Jeffrey Meyer's biography of EH -- one that is not all that good, IMO -- states that Papa was brutal and demanding during filming.

He didn't like porky Irishman Tracy playing his emaciated Cuban Santiago, so he forbade Tracy from all the screenwriting confabs.

In general, Hemingway treated Tracy so badly that -- according to Meyer -- reformed alcoholic Tracy fell off the wagon and went on a toot that interfered with film shooting.

I don't think Hemingway visited Tracy on the set of The Old man and the Sea although he did visit him in Cuba before filming began. So maybe the photo you have was taken there?

rob on the job, what is it that you don't like about Meyer's book? My opinion of it is that it is the best single volume biography of Hemingway, aside from Carlos Baker. Michael Reynolds five volume biography being the best.
